WELCOME TO THE GREATER HOUSTON AREA CHAPTER

Houston has always been at the heart of economic opportunities and pursuits. Entrepreneurship is a fundamental principal in this town. Why should the environment and the building industry be any different?

The Greater Houston Area Chapter is leading the way in connecting environmental stewardship and sound business practices within the local building industry.

With a diverse membership representing many segments of the building market, we are reaching out to our community, our government, and our institutions promoting construction processes and buildings that are environmentally responsible, profitable and healthy places to live and work.

NEWS
June 29, 2007 – Two new HISD elementary schools, Walnut Bend Elementary and Thompson Elementary, are going to be environmentally friendly. Car pools will drive right up to native plants when these elementary schools open up in the fall. The schools are designed to meet Leader in Energy and Environmental Design standards (LEED), and will seek LEED certification.

RECYCLING BULLETIN:recycling symbol
The Greater Houston Area Chapter of the USGBC advocates improving your recycling skills!

The Sandcastle Recycling was a very successful first step! We estimate over 300 pounds of aluminum cans and plastic bottles were recycled. The combined efforts of the AIA Sandcastle Committee, AIA Committee on the Environment, and the USGBC Greater Houston Area Chapter, provided over 50 cardboard containers with restrictor tops on the beach so the over 20,000 participants could make the ecologically correct disposal decision with their beverage containers. Special thanks to Rudy Del Bosque of Gensler and Steve Stelzer of Heights Venture Architects for collecting the containers so that the Galveston Parks Board could get them to the Galveston Recycling Center.

LEGISLATIVE ALERT - SUMMARY:

SB 12, SB 541, HB 4, HB 3070 and HB 3693 HAVE ALL PASSED!

The 80th Texas Legislative session ended Monday, May 28, 2007. It was a whirlwind several months - 140 days to be precise - with a record 6,198 bills being filed. The South Central Regional Council began tracking bills related to green building, energy efficiency, and water conservation early in the session. The Council (chaired by our own Aaron Tuley) quickly learned that some things move very quickly in the Capitol City, and several times folks from Austin and San Antonio were called upon last minute to go testify on behalf of a bill.

There were also many last minute calls to our membership to show their support. The Greater Houston Area Chapter would like to thank everyone who responded to our Legislative Alerts over the past few months. Whether by mail, email, fax, or phone, many of you rallied to show your support for a variety of bills that promoted Green Building, Energy Efficiency, and Water Conservation. Quite a few of these bills successfully passed, including SB 12, SB 541, HB 4, HB 3070 and HB 3693. Plus many of the strong features from bills that did not make it were incorporated into these and other bills by amendment. See below for the final results of the bills that you were asked to support.
